Rescue Pets needing your support

BJ

BJ

BJ is a Lab mix that was dumped at a local restaurant with a boxer. Someone took the boxer home, but left the lab to fend for himself. One of the waitresses could not stand watching him in the cold rain so she looked for rescue to take him. The Humane League was able to help this wonderful boy, unfortunately he tested positive for heartworms and is now waiting for treatment. Please help us help these dogs with treatment and a chance at a new life.

Can you please help?

Ellie & Adam

Ellie

Adam

**Update 8/9/10: Ellie and Adam have both successfully completed heartworm treatment!

The first Saint Bernard is a female named Ellie (short for elephant). She was rescued from a local animal control with her buddy Adam. They both had been living outdoors in a pen. Due to boredom, they kept escaping. After repeated pick ups by animal control the owner finally relinquished them. They were sent to rescue where they both tested positive for heartworms and require treatment. Since they both weigh over 100lbs each, treatment will be very expensive. Please help us with these 2 gorgeous dogs get the treatment they need.

CAN YOU PLEASE HELP?

Kelly

Kelly

**Update 8/9/10: Kelly has completed treatment and is ready for adoption!

Kelly is a wonderful collie mix that was wondering the country roads. He was taken into our rescue and guess what? He also tested positive for heartworms. Heartworm infections seem to be on the rise as more and more dogs are testing positive. Treatment is expensive and somewhat risky, but fatal if left untreated. Please help us help these pets.

Can you please help?

Kori

Kori

**Update 8/9/10: Kori's heart did not withstand the heartworms. She struggled through treatment and eventually the damage to her heart was too much. It was not the treatment in this case that was too much. It was the long term damage to the worms living within her that caused her heart failure. She is now resting in peace. It is a sad thing to see a dog or anyone suffer and die from something so preventable. Please keep your pet on heartworm prevention!

Kori is a shy little stray and it really makes you curious what her life could have been like before. She wants to be so loving and trusting, but she is hesisitant. She has obvious signs of neglect, ranging from emaciation, to scared and you guessed it heartworm positive.

Unfortunately, Kori got into stage 2 of treatment and did not do well and we had to stop. We are going to use non-traditional treatment alternatives that are slower but hopefully safer for her. It is just going to take time.

She has really come a long way. She has gained weight, is trying to trust and is showing us she really does know how to wag her tail. She will make a great companion once she is better.

CAN YOU PLEASE HELP?

Jolee

Jolee

**Update 2/6/10: Jolee has completed treatment and been adopted

Jolee came to us out of animal control. She was so matted and covered in manure she had to be shaved. Surprise, surprise, she also tested positive for heartworms. She is in the second stage of treatment and is doing very well so far. As a matter of fact, she is doing so well she wants to play. Playing and running is a no no in treatment so keeping her settled is going to be a challenge. But we are at least glad she isn't feeling any ill effects. Her treatment should be concluded by the end of January and as you can see does take quite a bit of time and space not to mention all the subsequent care and the expense of treatment.

Can you please help?

Landon

Landon

**Update 12/14/09: Zita and Landon have both completed heartworm treatment and been adopted. Thanks to everyone that donated and supported them!!

I lived my life chained to a converted outhouse. I never received any vet care until I was turned over to the Humane League of Lake Lanier. I am a little shy and unsocialized but very sweet.

However, with little surpise, since I was never to the vet, I tested positive for heartworms. I need treatment and your help. Won't you please donate towards my treatment?

CAN YOU PLEASE HELP?

Zita

Zita

**Update 12/14/09: Zita and Landon have both completed heartworm treatment and been adopted. Thanks to everyone that donated and supported them!!

We are currently treating 6 heartworm positive dogs. Zita (means Little Girl) is a beautiful blue merle collie. She came to us out of animal control, her owners never claimed her. She is young, probably around 3, but old enough to have heartworms. Once bitten by a mosquito, the infection takes about 6 months to manifest itself into the heart. But once there, it can be deadly if left untreated. Treatment takes time, care and money. Won't you please help us save this precious girl?

Can you please help?

Boone

Boone

**Update 9/16/09: Boone has had his surgery and is doing very well. Full use of the leg is going to take time, but he is doing great. Through all of this he has never complained. He has met each day with a new sunrise and a new beginning. He is now eager for the chance at having a family that cares for him. Thanks to all of you that supported Boone in thoughts, prayers and donations.

Boone is a super special boy. He is so stoic and never complains, but we could tell from the way he favored his leg something was wrong. Once x-rayed the vet could not believe he was using his leg at all. We believe he must have been hit by a car at some point and never treated. His hip is completely out of the socket and his knee is fractured.

Surgery for his hip should greatly reduce his pain and help him walk more freely. We did not know that he was injured when we got him out of animal control. But once you meet him you realize he is an amazing dog and you are left with no choice to help him. Please help us help Boone!

Noah

Noah

**Update 9/16/09: Noah, is really turning out to be a very handsome boy. His coat is coming in so very softly and richly. He has had made it through a course of heartworm treatment and has done well. He is now available for adoption.

Noah was picked up as a stray by animal control. He was so matted you could not begin to touch his skin through the neglected coat. We had no choice but to shave him. As we took off the coat you could see the layers of seasonal shedding as his coat naturally tried to renew itself but since he never was brushed it just wove tighter and tighter forming a shell. Now add to this the years of weather and rain and it trying to dry itself, this boy really stank. With such a hard shell for hair the skin didn't get much air and once shaved he had oozing sores. But now at least his skin is clean and healing. He looks a little funny, but we are sure he feels much better.

With this condition, obviously he lived outside because no one could have stood to have him in a home, and with the apparent neglect we were not surprised to find he also had heartworms. We are starting him on treatment but could really use your support to help offset his expenses. He really is a nice boy and we would love to give him a second chance.

Can you please help?

RJ

RJ

**Update 6/28/09: RJ has completed his treatment and is going to his new home today!

RJ (so named after the Raccoon on 'Over the Hedge") is a super funny boy. But the fact he is heartworm positive is no laughing matter. RJ was shoved out of a moving car into an Atlanta area school yard. A kind person picked him up and that was when he tested positive for this deadly disease. He is now with us in rescue and we have started his treatment. He is in stage 1 (the easy part) and has more than 60 days to go. Won't you please consider helping us with the expenses associated with his treatment? It is only because of your support that we can go above the normal needs of these rescued animals.

Dublin

Dublin

**Update 6/28/09: Dublin had a successful surgery, but is still hesitant to use his leg. He continuing physical therapy and we are optimistic that he will make a full recovery!

**Update 3/10/09: Dublin is scheduled for his surgery on the 18th of March. We wanted to give him some time to put on some much needed weight and muscle before having the operation. He is flourishing in his foster home and is now ready.

Dublin came to us through Animal Control along with Sophie. We noticed Dublin had a problem walking. After an exam and X-rays it has been determined that Dublin has very bad dysplasia in his left hip. This is causing pain and will only get worse as he gets older. Dublin is only 3 and 1/2 years old and has a long life ahead of him and his hip just isn't going to last him that long. Dublin will require surgery to stop the degeneration of his joint, subsequent arthritis and years of pain.

Can you please help us with his surgery expenses?

Wrigley

Wrigley, Collie

Wrigley was taken out of a near by shelter. He was heartworm negative and we thought we were home free. He arrived from transport and we realized he wasn't using his rear leg very well. That was only the tip of the iceburg for this poor thing. His neuter became badly infected and we think if ruptured through and out of his stomach. He required emergency surgery. While at the vet x-rays were taken of his hip and we found he had also been shot in his rear at some point in his life, his hip socket is gone and he will require more surgery to help with his ability to walk.

His initial vet bill is over $1000.00 and the FHO surgery required is estimated to be over $300.00. Please help us give him his much needed surgery. He is such a sweet and beautiful animal. He just needs some kindness and help.

Duke

Duke

Duke is Mr. Personality. He loves to romp and play with the big dogs. Maybe that is how he tore the Anterior Cruciate Ligament in his knee. However he did it, Duke requires surgery to repair his knee and restore function to his back leg.

We need your support to cover the surgical expenses.

Prissy

Prissy

Prissy the dog

Prissy was abandoned in Dawson County. Her owners left her behind when they moved. A neighbor started feeding her, but she had to move as well. When her elderly parents realized no one was caring for her, they couldn't bear the thought of this poor soul being alone and hungry. They went and rescued her. Unbeknownst to them, she was pregnant. They helped her raise her pups, and the Humane League helped with placing some of them. We also helped by spaying Prissy and heartworm testing her. The final blow for this poor dog was she tested positive for heartworms. Now she needs treatment.

We are sponsoring the dog and family who only want her happy and healthy.

Roxie

Roxie

Roxie was abandoned when her owners moved. They let her have pups, and then left her. They left her knowing she was in terrible condition. Fortunately for Roxie, she was rescued by one of the Humane Leagues volunteers. Upon taking her to the vet, they realized she was positive for heartworms. They took care of the surgery she needed, and now she needs help with her heartworm treatment.

Neglected Collie

Purebred Collie

Partially shaved Collie

Purebred Collie

**Update December 19, 2007:
After a full evaluation at the Vet, the bad news has piled higher. This super-sweet 8-9 year-old collie is heartworm positive. Not surprising that the previous owner neglected to provide the once-per-month pill that would have prevented the deadly worms from infesting this poor dogs heart. Treatment and recovery will be a slow process, but he will receive the love and care he needs throughout the course of treatment.
Please protect your pets from heartworms with the proper medicine from your Vet.

Animal Control impounded this purebred collie in response to the owner's neglect and refusal to render proper care for his pets. The feces-filled fur was so matted on the back of the collie, the mat was as hard as a turtle shell. The collie had difficulty moving, eating, even tilting his head due to the extremely matted hair painfully pulling on his neck, legs and body.

Needless to say, the first course of action when he was taken into the care of Humane League of Lake Lanier was a professional shave-down. Long-time collie rescuers, we have never had to full-body shave a collie in our program before, which indicates the height of neglect this poor dog suffered.

Although we are an all volunteer organization, rescue pets often require professional services, such as this difficult groom, before a veterinarian can even examine them.
Please help us continue to provide this level of care to the rescue pets in your community.

Porsche

Porsche

The Humane League came upon her when taking other rescues from a local Animal Shelter. The caregivers there showed her to us and asked if we could help. Porsche had been hit by a car and couldn't or wouldn't walk. At first she we didn't know how extensive her injuries were. She was taken to the vet and X-rayed. Her pelvis was badly injured and we truly didn't know if she was going to make it. The Veterinarian started her on pain meds right away and anti-inflammatories. The best we could do was give her some time. And Miracles of Miracles, her spirit to survive has prevailed. She will be coming into foster care after a lengthy stay at the vet. We are very hopeful she will make a wonderful recovery. Can you please help support her and the veterinarians that have helped her by donating to her medical expenses? Through all of her pain and suffering, she has never offered to nip or bite. She has maintained a very good disposition.

This certainly makes her a dog worth saving.

Pets Given a Second Chance because of Your Support!

With the deck stacked against them, these homeless pets were given a second chance at a happy life. Because of Community support through donations, these wonderful pets received the veterinary care they needed. The volunteers of the Humane League of Lake Lanier and all the rescue dogs want to offer a heartfelt Thank You! to everyone who contributed to the care of homeless animals.

Becca

Quincey,

**Update 1/28/09:
Becca's tumor is benign. She is feeling better and will now run and play, where as before the surgery she was very reserved and tender footed. Thank you to Susan Card and Ann White for donating towards her surgery.

Becca is a sweet little beagle mix that we got from a local shelter because she needed help with her foot. It turns out she has what the vet believes is a cancerous tumor in between her toes on her back right foot. She surgery is scheduled for January 19th and the cost will be somewhere between $150.00 and $400.00, depending on the severity of the surgery. She may lose a toe, but we want to save her life as she is so sweet and good. Can you please help us save her?

Gigi

Gigi

**Update 3/10/09:
Gigi is in finishing up on stage 3 of the heartworm treatment and is responding beautifully. She is due to be put back on heartworm prevention next week, if she continues to do well she will be available for adoption on the 21st. Yeah GiGi!

**Update 1/20/09:
GiGi is in stage 2 of the heartworm treatment. She has received 1 of her injections and is doing very well so far.

Gigi is a Pure-bred Boxer. It is obvious from her condition that she was used strictly as a breeder. She was not cared for and was dumped at a local 'Kill-shelter' where she was going to be put up for adoption until testing positive for heartworms. Her only hope was for rescue to take and treat her.

Please, Remember me if you ever buy a purebred puppy! Good breeders are in it for the care and breed of the next generation. But there are more who are in it for the money and will exploit the parents, giving them little or no care. This results in an inferior pup, and much suffering. Please don't contribute to this type of suffering. It is preventable!

Can you Please Help??

Quincey

Quincey,

**Update 1/24/09:
Quincey has successfully completed his heartworm treatment and is ready for adoption.

Quincey is only 1 of 3 Pure-bred dogs we are currently treating for heartworms. Being a pure-breed does not exempt them from getting sick. Please help us with these extra expenses. These are all really great dogs, they just need the time and treatment to help them on their way.

Please remember to keep your pet on heartworm prevention each and every month. It only takes the bite from one mosquito to spread this deadly disease.
CAN YOU PLEASE HELP?

Ginny

Ginny

**Update 2/2/09: Ginny has completed heartworm treatment and is now ready for her forever home.

Ginny was turned into a shelter by her owner. She is about 7 years old and very gentle, sweet, and as easy as they come. However, as much as the shelter wanted to put her up for adoption, they could not. She tested positive for heartworms. Only rescue was allowed to take her to assure treatment for her condition.

She needs your support to help an all volunteer group pay to make her better. Can you Please Help??

Trudy

Trudy

**Update November 2008: Trudy has successfully made it through treatment and is ready for adoption.

One of our volunteers saw this little dog being set out of a truck at the end of her road. She is very sweet and was previously spayed. However, she was not put on heartworm prevention and subsequently tested positive for this dreadful condition. She is now in rescue and we have started treatment. We get so many dogs that require treatment. It is a risky, treatment involving a lot of time and money, yet so preventable.

Please help us by donating to this deserving animal and please keep your dog on heartworm prevention.

GusGus

**Update November 2008: Gus is through heartworm treatment. We took the long and safe route in the treatment, which helps to cure them safely of the deadly disease. He is now ready for his forever home.

Rescue was called for this boy as he tested positive for heartworms. He was in a local shelter and they could not adopt out a dog with this fatal disease. He needed to be treated. Heartworms is beyond what traditional shelters can do because of the time involved with treatment. Rescue was his only hope. Once we met this sweet boy, we knew there was no choice. We had to help. We can only do this with the support of others who love animals too. We are an all volunteer organization and rely on you.

Can you please help Gus?

Babette and Davidson

Dachshunds

**Update October, 2008: Babette and Davidson have gotten clean bills of health from the vet and have both found their forever homes!

These melt-your-heart Dachshunds were pulled from a County Animal Shelter because they have heartworms. They love to curl up on the couch with their foster mom and are ever-appreciative of their new (if temporary) living arrangements.

Due to the sudden influx of rescue pets, we need your help now more than ever to give these wonderful pets the veterinary care they need so they can find families of their own. Please help these deserving Dachshunds get Heartworm Treatment?

Azalea

Azalea

**Update August, 2008: Azalea has gotten the clean bill of health from the vet and is now seeking her forever home!

Azalea is a happy, smiling girl. We got her out of animal control and pretty quickly realized she had something wrong with her head and eye. She was immediately taken to the vet. She was seen and x-rayed. It was determined she needed surgery to pull the eye-lid down from her eye as it had curled in and was scratching and irritating the cornea. We are still waiting further consultation to determine what they think has happened to her head, either an early trauma or a deformity that has effected her muscles and some nerves in and around the eye.

Can you please help this sweet girl get her chance at a new life?

Mrs. Doodlebug after her treatments

Mrs Doodlebug

Mrs Doodlebug

Mrs. Doodlebug with her pups

Mrs Doodlebug

**Update May 2008** Mrs. Doodlebug has successfully completed her heartworm treatments and is receiving proper surgery and care for her eye. As soon as the vet gives Mrs. Doodlebug the all-clear health check, she will be ready to find her permanent family and home.

Mrs Doodlebug, a gorgeous little beagle mix, arrived at a high-kill shelter very pregnant. She also arrived with cherry-eye which was never treated and has caused the condition to worsen. At the very least, she needs surgery and treatment, and may possibly need it to be removed. On top of that she has tested positive for heartworms. She is such a sweet girl that the shelter started looking for a rescue to take her. We were contacted and the Humane League of Lake Lanier decided to help. She needed a break in life. In the meantime, she gave birth to 5 babies. All healthy!

The amazing thing about Mrs Doodlebug is, despite her adversities in life, she has kept such a kind and gentle spirit. While she was still at the shelter, an orphaned puppy arrived. The new 1/2lb puppy was not thriving and was going to die, so they gave the pup to Mrs Doodlebug. She took the wee thing in and started nursing it.

Can you please help us help Mrs Doodlebug? She certainly deserves it.

Caramel

Caramel, Purebred Australian Shepherd

**Update June 1, 2008** Caramel has successfully completed his heartworm treatments and is seeking his permanent family. Congratulations Caramel!!

Caramel is a purebred Australian Shepherd and a beautiful example of his breed. Silky coat, inteligent eyes and a personality that could win anyone over! He also represents the first group of rescue dogs to come from the brand new Dawson County Humane Society shelter. Caramel and his cohort Royce were taken into rescue because they tested positive for Heartworms. Otherwise healthy, these happy boys would have been euthanized in most shelters because they have heartworms. Normally, ending up in a shelter is not the highlight of any dog story; however, Caramel is very lucky and will now be treated so he can look for his new family this summer.

Donations are appreciated to help cover the expenses of Caramel's treatment. And please remember, the best pet care available is not enough, unless that care includes veterinarian-recommended heartworm preventative.

Royce

Royce, Labrador Retriever

**Update June 1, 2008** Royce has successfully completed his heartworm treatments and is seeking his permanent family. Congratulations Royce!!

Just like his buddy Caramel, Royce is a rescue from Dawson County and is heartworm positive. By personality and overall health, it appears that Royce was well taken care of prior to his arrival at the shelter. This serves as a reminder to all pet owners to keep your dog on heartworm preventative all year-round for the life of your pet. Even indoor dogs go outside sometimes to play and take care of business. All it takes is one bite from one mosquito, and your beloved pet can contract the deadly heartworms.

Can you please help with the vet expenses related to Royce's heartworm treatment?

Mitzy

Mitzy

Mitzy is just a little thing, which is why it is a miracle she survived being hit by a car. Now, this friendly girl has a crushed pelvis that must heal while she is in Humane League of Lake Lanier foster care. The vet says she should make a full recovery. Not only do we agree completely, we also know that Mitzy will make a fantastic companion for an adoptive family when she gets the all clear from the vet.

Mitzy asked her foster mom to remind everyone how important it is to maintain your pets securely on your property. Do not wait until your pet is hit by a car to realize your fence needs repaired or an alternate means of exercise than running free are needed to keep your beloved dogs and cats out of harms way. Like a two-year-old child, a dog does not know not to chase a toy (or squirel) into a busy street.

Mitzy also asks if you can please help with the vet expenses? Then she can find a family that will offer her a safer place to romp and play.

Mr. Dixie

Mr. Dixie

**Update** April 22, 2008
Mr. Dixie is a healthy happy boy that is looking for a home that will provide love and regular exercise!

Hi! I am Mr. Dixie,

I came from the deep of Dixie along with a few other dogs. We all needed special care, as our neglect was long and lasting. I came in almost bald and extremely emaciated. I have been in foster care for 4 months and I finally have hair. My stomach is straightened out and I am putting on weight. But I still need help.
Can you help with donations of money or some Nutro puppy food? Either way you will help me, and the help is much appreciated!

Wags and Kisses,
Mr. Dixie

Gabe

Gabe

Gabby

Gabby

Both Gabby and Gabe came to us straight off the animal control truck. Fortunately for them, we interceded. Both the pups had 2 different types of Mange. (Both Sarcoptic and Demodec). Both very treatable, but it does take time to help them over come the disease and respective skin issues.

We expect them to make a full and wonderful recovery, but it will take time, diligence, good food, medication and support of the immune system to help them beat this. What we have learned with these kids; a little love, goes along way.

Please help support that effort.

Butter

Butter

He must have been somebody's baby. How he ended up at animal control with a nasty oozing tumor and remained unclaimed as a stray, is astounding. We took him into rescue to have his tumor removed. Fortunately it was benign and the vet gave immediate clearance for Butter to begin his search for a family!

Cadbury

Cadbury

**Update November 1, 2007: Cadbury is in the third, and final, stage of his heartworm treatment. With the completion of his treatment and the all-clear health check from the veterinarian, Cadbury should be ready for adoption in the beginning of December.

Who could tell from this happy face that he is sick from Heartworms. A very young chocolate lab who was left unprotected and now needs our help. All it takes is one bite from an infected mosquito and a dog's life is threatened.

Please help us treat and save him
from this deadly disease.

Harrison

Harrison

**Update November 24, 2007: Stay tuned for photo updates, as Harrison is now a beautiful, healthy Weimeraner. He continues to be more and more comfortable with new people and furry playmates, and will make someone a wonderful pet!

**Update November 1, 2007: Harrison has been steadily gaining weight since entering the Humane League of Lake Lanier rescue program. He is being fostered in a doggy day-care, Gypsy Paws, where he receives daily socialization from both people and other dogs. Hopefully, he will be physically and psychologically ready for an adoptive home soon!

**Summer 2007:
*I am a long hair Weimaraner and I need a home! I was rescued from a nasty puppy mill where I was given green water and my food bowl had feces in it. I am about 30lbs under weight and need a lot of patience as human interaction is new to me.*

Like so many other pets entering rescue, Harrison needs a little extra work before he will be ready to enter a home environment. Special food and veterinary care to ensure that he attains his ideal, healthy weight are just the beginning of Harrison's trip to becoming a happy dog. When needed, volunteers take pets, like Harrison to trainers that help us guide the pet through the healing process and adjust to family living.

We volunteer our time to help loving, deserving pets like Harrison. And we need your support to go that extra mile. By sponsoring a Humane League of Lake Lanier rescue pet, you are paving the way to a brighter future.

All donations are tax deductible and all funds donated go directly toward the care of the rescue pets.
Please be Harrison's Guardian Angel!

Rufus before surgery

Rufus

Rufus injury

Rufus after surgery and good food

Rufus Post-Op

**Update October 2007: Rufus has successfully healed from his surgery. As you can see in the picture, his coat is smooth and soft and he has filled out from eating high-quality food. His mouth has fully healed from surgery, which makes eating even easier! He is such a gorgeous example of the Weimeraner breed and a wonderful dog in general.

**Summer 2007
My name is Rufus and I need your help!

I am supposed to be a beautiful Weimaraner with a grey/silver coat and beautiful eyes. You see, an evil man decided to keep me in his back yard in the full sun with no shade. He forced me to drink green water and my living area had feces and dirt everywhere.

Somehow I ripped my lip… My foster mommy thinks that I tried to escape – you see, I am a smart boy. The evil man never had my lip fixed and it is very painful. The Human League of Lake Lanier is going to get my lip fixed. They are going to sew it up, pull my loose tooth and make me good as new! I will be able to keep water in my mouth and everything! Once I recover in 3 or 4 weeks (but only after I heal and have an all clear from the vet) I will be adoptable. By then I will have a full beautiful coat and my eyes will show much more life.

Will you donate toward helping other dogs like me?
The Humane League of Lake Lanier relies on donations from people like you to offer proper veterinary care to rescue pets like Rufus.

Jennie
Jennie

Jennie with her beautiful Cocker coat
Jennie

**Update October 2007: Thanks to your generous support, Jennie was successfully treated for heartworms and recovered from her surgery. Jennie has been adopted to a family that promises to always love and protect Jennie, as every pet deserves.

These 2 precious Cockers were turned into Animal Control because they were not wanted! The owners didn't even care enough to give their names. They were both matted, smelly, and heartworm positive. Which will seal their fate in many instances as they can only go to rescue. We were happy to take them as they are both very sweet and good. They are very willing and eager to please.

The vet discovered that Jennie also has a breast tumor that must be removed. Because Jennie was allowed to go into season and have multiple litters of puppies, her risk of breast cancer was much higher than a dog that was spayed at a young age. Jennie is a perfect example for why you should spay your dogs and cats before they enter their first heat cycle (which is around 6 months of age). Every heat cycle and every litter of kittens or puppies significantly increases the risk of breast cancer and premature death of your pet.

**Update August 30**
Jennie has successfully completed her heartworm treatment and is preparing for her surgery to remove the tumors. As soon as she has fully recovered from the surgery, Jennie will be ready to find her true, loving home!

Monique

Monique

She is heartworm positive and was an owner turn in at Hall Co. As always, we are happy that we are able to work so closely with animal control and help dogs that have no chance in that environment for treatment. But we can only do it with the support of the public.

Monique is in heartworm treatment. We are currently accepting donations for her treatment and surgery and will soon be accepting applications for her adoption. She is a very sweet girl and loves to stick by her foster mom. She is mostly housebroken and doesn't disturb anything.

Berkeley

Berkeley

These 2 precious Cockers were turned into Animal Control because they were not wanted! The owners didn't even care enough to give their names. They were both matted, smelly, and heartworm positive. Which will seal their fate in many instances as they can only go to rescue. We were happy to take them as they are both very sweet and good. They are very willing and eager to please.

They will be starting treatment soon. If you would like to consider making a contribution, it will go to help pets just like them.

Gordon

Gordon

Due to negligent owners Gordon was found in the middle of the hwy. The negligence continued when they didn't look for him. Lucky for Gordon he found his way to rescue. Especially since he has also tested positive for heartworms. With your help and ours he will get his treatment. The Humane League of Lake Lanier, Inc. is currently treating 5 dogs for this fatal condition (as of June 19, 2007). We simply cannot do it without your support. You can make a difference to Gordon's life. Gordon needs help.

Bronson

Bronson

They call me Bronson. They gave me a strong name to give me strength through the next few months. I have had a very hard life. I was never part of a family, but left outside all by myself, without good food or companionship. My owner turned me over to animal control because I barked too much. She just didn't hear what I was trying to tell her. I needed help.

I still need help, because I have heartworms. I do not bark anymore, because my foster parents give me everything I need. I don't bark, because I don't have to ask for anything anymore. I have a warm bed and plenty of wholesome food to eat and lots of hugs and cuddles. Now that I know what it is to have a family to love, I want a family of my very own. Can you help me get there? Because I am so tiny, it won't take much to clear my heart of the worms. Just a few people have to donate $5 to get me healthy. Then it will be time to go "Family Shopping"!

Astro

Bronson

This sweet boy was found to have a grade 5 heart murmur. This is very big news for such a tiny little puppy. The vet has suspicions of what is causing the heart murmur, but only an ECG (electrocardiogram) will tell us for sure what Astro is facing. Without the ECG, we are blind to how to treat or cure his heart murmur. Without the ECG, Astro has no chance of ever finding a loving adoptive family and may even mean he will not live to see his first birthday. Generous people have donated most of the monies needed to care for Astro, but we still have a way to go.

Thank you to everyone who generously donated toward the care of Astro.

**Update**
Astro had his ECG by an experienced Vet. He has an irreparable, congenital systolic heart murmur. He has been put on appropriate medications to maximize his quality of life and help his heart work the best that it can. According to the Vet, the heart murmur will eventually cause heart failure. Typically, pups born with this severe of a murmur only live 8-12 months. Astro has been placed in a respite home. He has no idea that anything is wrong with him, and he enjoys playing with his chihuahua friend at his new home and his cuddle time with his people. The volunteer who is caring for Astro understands the care Astro will require and is prepared for everything that may happen in Astro's future. Again, we thank everyone who contributed to Astro's veterinary care. Because of your generousity, he will be able to live the rest of his short life happy and comfortable and blissfully ignorant of his disability.

Eva in her new home!

Eva

My new name is Eva and I am a purebred Doberman Pinscher. For the first 2.5 years of my life I have lived in a crate and used solely for my ability to produce puppies. I currently am missing most of my hair and weigh 43 pounds, but should be about 60 pounds, which means I am missing 25% of my healthy body weight. When animal control saved me from the Breeder, they thought I would have to be put to sleep because I was so shy and I have Cherry Eye in one eye. Thanks to the efforts of some wonderful volunteers and shelter workers, I found a place in a foster home for the Humane League of Lake Lanier, Inc.

And now, I am finding out how wonderful it is to be a dog!! I ate 8 cups of puppy food as a welcome to my new home, and the food bowl never goes empty (this is new for me as well). As it turns out, I am not shy at all. Although the first night I was not quite sure what to make of things, by day two I was snuggling on the couch with Angela and enjoying Animal Planet in my private room with my very own window and TV. I walk well on a leash and give kisses to everyone I meet, cause I love everyone!

Everyone knows I will find a loving family, but I have to get all healthy before I can start looking for them. Can you help my new foster family pay for the surgery to fix my eye? I’ll give you kisses if you help me! After all, it is generous people like you who give dogs like me a second chance at a happy life.
Update: It took some time and a lot of patience, but Eva recovered from her cherry-eye surgery, grew in all her hair, and gained a healthy 20+ pounds of muscle (and maybe a little pudge just for good measure). Most importantly, Eva's foster parents taught her how to be a real dog and a wonderful companion. She now runs and plays with other dogs, uses the restroom in the yard (not on the sidewalk), walks great on a leash, and has completely gotten over her fear of the outdoors, strangers and life in general. She has blossomed into a fabulous girl and found the perfect family that promises to continue showing Eva how wonderful life is.

Gable after Treatment!

Gable
Gable when he entered our program

Gable

This is Gable, and he was picked up by animal control after being attacked by another dog. He has sustained severe injuries to his left front leg and some minor injuries to his face and back right leg.

The amazing thing is the shelter took him to the vet and started treating him. This is a small shelter in North Ga. and they incurred $179.00 in expenses to treat him of which $129.00 is outstanding. We are raising money to help them recoup there loss as He was turned over to rescue at no charge.

Can you help to treat Gable? This will only encourage them to work hard to continue and help those in need. Any money raised will first go to them and any thing else will be used to help us care for his injury which will take weeks to heal.

Thank you for caring!
**Update: Thanks to all the community support and the TLC given to Gable in his foster home, Gable is now healed and in search of his new home. If you are interested in Gable, we are now accepting applications for his adoption.

Julian

Julian

Julian, from all evidence is the victim of neglect and certainly abuse. Scarred, hand-shy, very thin, heartworm positive! Yes, these things happen to pets in our society. The amazing thing is how Julian has borne it all and yet a more loving soul you could not meet! ALL he wants is your approval, and he is instantly happy! He is soo gentle and sweet. His kind brown eyes speak of a compassion and loving nature of a pet that has risen above it all!

Please help Julian in his last battle of the neglect! Help him beat his heartworms! The Humane League of Lake Lanier, Inc is a volunteer organization dedicated to offering time, love, rehabilitation to many pets. But we can not continue to help specail projects like Julian without your support too. Clearing Julian of his heartworms will require 60 possibly 90 days and several hundred dollars, not to mention food and his other needs during this time. Please help!

**Update 3/6/07** Julian is almost done with the 3rd week of stage 3 in his heartworm treatment. That means he is just days away from getting his heartworm prevention pill, which will kill the baby worms floating in his blood stream, and his health check-up. He is doing great and putting on much needed weight. If all continues to go well, Julian will be available for adoption shortly! Julian has shown to be a wonderful dog during his time and care in his foster home. He wants to thank all of you who donated monies on his behalf so he could receive the care he needed.

**Update 3/26/07** Great News!! Julian has successfully completed heartworm treatment and is now available for adoption! Thank you to everyone who contributed to saving this boy's life.
